This week we interviewed DIY artist LUXI! She recently released an album that coincides with a point and click video game titled "Lost Letters of Seraphina." After a recent tour, LUXI finds unique ways to make her voice heard with an electro beat that will leave you inspired. Head over to our weekly Spotify Playlist she curated as well!
1) Hey LUXI! Thanks for interviewing with Indie Witches. How did LUXI come to be?
Definitely, thanks for having me! LUXI evolved naturally over time since childhood when I started recording my own songs for my friends at school..but the name eventually came from the movie Virgin Suicides since I used to get compared to Kirsten Dunst a lot in high school, and I was looking for an alternative name to "Alex" which I never really resonated with.
2) Could you briefly describe your music-making process?
Sure, I work primarily in Ableton. Usually I like to start with a good beat and add layers and layers of loops on top of it until I find something that I could listen to for hours, then I break it down and create some kind of song structure out of it.. then I get into a meditative state while I hum tunes and words kind of just fall out of me onto the music and I start to figure out what I'm trying to say, sometimes it's what I need to hear.
3) That’s awesome you created a video game to go alongside your music, how was creating that?
Thanks! It was a massive challenge and undertaking, but I really wanted to push myself in a way I haven't done before and create an immersive experience to go alongside the music, basically a different way people can listen to an album.
4) How is it being completely DIY on all your projects?
That is also a challenge, lately I've been opening up more and finding people I can trust with my work to do things like mix and master tracks or add riffs to the songs, this was my most collaborative album to date, but I still recorded it all myself, haha.
5) If you could turn into any fictional character, who would it be and why?
Sailor Moon because she has super cool powers and is a total badass.
6) Who are you currently listening to?
Right now I love Abra, Banks, Santigold, Pictureplane, Tinashe.. too many to list really.
7) Favorite venue you’ve ever played?
I love the sound system at a local venue "Cactus Club" here in Milwaukee, but I feel like the shows I really love playing are when I'm on the ground with the audience and able to let loose and try new things.
8) Any upcoming shows? Where is the best place for fans to follow you?
Yes! I'm currently on tour through November 11th, but all my upcoming shows will be on my Facebook page: Facebook.com/luximusic since it's the easiest to update on my own.
9) Any parting thoughts? Open platform!
Sure! I'd love to inspire people to take chances, take on a wild project, do something you think you couldn't do, you'd be surprised what you can accomplish when you just work at it a little at a time. It's okay to be scared, but don't let that stop you from doing what you love.
